Mistaken Memories of Mediaeval ManhattanMistaken Memories of Mediaeval Manhattan | Thursday Afternoon | Khumba Mela | Glitterbug

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). Brian Eno has always had an interest in film. As well as providing music for the films of others, he has also made his own film works. As you can imagine, these are not based on normal narrative styles.

For these works Eno used an early video camera obtained from a dubious source. He once pointed the lens at the sun, resulting in damage to the mechanism and a permanent change in the way this camera recorded it's surroundings. The colour balance seems to be a little strange most of the time, and shadow areas take on strange shifting hues.

-Mistaken Memories of Mediaeval Manhattan- is his earliest generally available work. It is based on the video he recorded from the windows of various apartments he lived in in New York. There are seven scenes with accompanying music, and they are all filmed by laying the camera on it's side on the window sill. They are all recordings changes that happened during the videoing. Although it is obviously a cityscape, there is no obvious visible human movement. The clouds blow across the sky, the light changes, but it is all very gradual and ambient. I was lucky enough to stumble across an installation of the work in Amsterdam in 1990, and later purchased a video copy for myself.
